Ground state

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006090

The lowest energy level that an atom, molecule, or other quantum system can occupy. In atmospheric science, this concept is relevant to understanding the energy absorption and emission properties of atmospheric gases. When molecules absorb radiation, they transition from their ground state to an excited state, later returning to the ground state by emitting radiation.
