Selection rules
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008775
Principles in quantum mechanics that determine whether a transition between two energy states of an atom or molecule is allowed or forbidden. These rules are based on conservation laws and the symmetry properties of the states involved. They dictate which spectral lines can be observed in atmospheric absorption and emission spectra.
