Line intensity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006973

A measure of the total absorption or emission associated with a specific spectral line in an atmospheric gas. It represents the integrated strength of the line over its entire frequency profile and depends on the quantum mechanical properties of the transition and the temperature of the gas. Line intensity is a key parameter in radiative transfer models for calculating the transmission and absorption of solar and terrestrial radiation by the atmosphere, with values compiled in databases like HITRAN.
