A method used in atmospheric radiative transfer models to efficiently calculate the absorption and emission of radiation by atmospheric gases. It simplifies complex spectral absorption by grouping spectral lines with similar absorption coefficients into 'k-distributions'. This technique significantly reduces computational cost while maintaining accuracy in climate and weather models.
