Bernal-Fowler rules
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010399
A set of two principles that describe the positions of hydrogen atoms within the crystalline structure of water ice. The first rule states that each oxygen atom is covalently bonded to two hydrogen atoms, and the second rule states that each hydrogen atom is positioned between two oxygen atoms, closer to one than the other. This arrangement explains the residual entropy of ice at a temperature of absolute zero.
