Encroachment method
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005364
A hydraulic modeling procedure used in floodplain management to determine the boundaries of a floodway. The method involves simulating artificial obstructions, or encroachments, on the edges of a river's floodplain and calculating the resulting increase in the water surface elevation for a specific flood event, such as the 100-year flood. Under U.S. FEMA regulations, the floodway is defined so that these encroachments do not cause the base flood elevation to rise by more than one foot.
