Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003751

The rapid abandonment of a river's established channel to form a new one on its floodplain. This process is often triggered by extreme hydrometeorological events, such as intense rainfall and associated flooding, which cause a sudden breach of the river's natural or artificial levees. The location of the new channel is influenced by the floodplain topography and the sediment load carried by the floodwaters.
