Glacier flood
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005980
A sudden release of a large volume of water from a glacier or glacier-dammed lake, often triggered by the collapse of an ice dam, rapid melting, or subglacial volcanic activity. These events, also known as jökulhlaups, can cause extensive downstream flooding and erosion. They are a natural hazard in glaciated regions, with discharge rates sometimes exceeding those of major rivers.
