Empirical flood formula

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005363

A mathematical equation used to estimate the peak discharge of a flood based on observed relationships between rainfall, catchment characteristics, and historical runoff data. These formulas, such as the Rational Method (Q=CIA), rely on easily measured parameters like drainage area, land cover, and rainfall intensity rather than a full physical simulation of hydrological processes. They are most applicable to small, ungauged watersheds where detailed data for complex models is unavailable.
