Eole

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005397

A pioneering French satellite experiment from the early 1970s designed to study atmospheric circulation by tracking a large fleet of instrumented balloons. The Eole satellite located and collected data from hundreds of superpressure, constant-level balloons drifting with the winds in the Southern Hemisphere's upper troposphere. This project provided one of the first large-scale, detailed datasets on wind patterns over the vast, data-sparse Southern Ocean, demonstrating the feasibility of satellite-based balloon tracking for meteorological observation.
