Fast ice

Sea ice that forms and remains attached to the coastline, an ice wall, or grounded icebergs. It extends seaward from the shore and does not drift with ocean currents or winds. Its stability makes it a platform for scientific research and a pathway for wildlife, but it can break up during warmer periods.
