Ice drift
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006409
The movement of sea ice that is not attached to the shoreline or grounded. This motion is driven by the combined forces of wind stress on the ice surface and ocean currents acting on its underside. The drift velocity is typically 1 to 2 percent of the wind speed, with its direction deflected by the Coriolis force.
