Forecast-informed reservoir operations

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005717

A water management strategy that incorporates advanced weather and streamflow forecasts into decisions about reservoir water releases. This approach allows for more flexible and adaptive management compared to traditional methods based on fixed, historical rule curves. By preemptively releasing water ahead of a major storm or conserving it during a predicted drought, this method can better balance the competing demands of flood control and water storage.
