Freezing spray

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001078

  1. Ocean spray that freezes upon contact with a vessel or other exposed surfaces when air temperatures are below freezing. This phenomenon occurs when strong winds lift seawater into the air, and the supercooled droplets then adhere and freeze to objects. Accumulations of freezing spray can add considerable weight to ships, potentially affecting their stability.

  2. An accumulation of freezing water droplets on a vessel caused by some appropriate combination of cold water, wind, cold air temperature, and vessel movement.
