A form of severe coastal weather where supercooled fog or sea spray freezes on contact with ships and other objects, forming a heavy coating of ice. This phenomenon occurs when cold air, with temperatures well below freezing, moves over relatively warmer open water. The rapid accumulation of ice can make vessels dangerously top-heavy and unstable, posing a serious maritime hazard.
