Gate-to-gate azimuthal shear
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005880
A measure of the change in radial velocity between adjacent radar gates along a constant range from the radar, indicating rotation within a storm. This shear is calculated from Doppler radar data and is a key indicator for identifying mesocyclones, which are rotating updrafts often associated with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. High values suggest strong rotational dynamics.
