Grease ice

A very early stage of sea ice formation, consisting of a soupy layer of ice crystals on the ocean surface that makes the water appear dull or greasy. It forms when frazil ice crystals coagulate and thicken. Grease ice is typically less than 10 centimeters thick and can dampen small waves.
