Young ice

Newly formed sea ice in a transitional stage between frazil ice and first-year ice, with a thickness ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters. It is more elastic than new ice and breaks into rectangular pieces under pressure. Young ice is subdivided into grey ice (10 to 15 cm thick) and grey-white ice (15 to 30 cm thick).
