Rubber ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008622

Newly formed sea ice that is weak and elastic, bending under waves or pressure instead of breaking. It forms in cold, calm conditions when the sea surface freezes over, and its flexibility comes from its thinness. As it thickens it becomes stiffer and passes into more rigid ice types such as young ice.
