Finger rafting
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005582
A process where thin, newly formed sea ice sheets slide over and under each other, creating interlocking, finger-like projections. This occurs when two ice floes converge under pressure, and it is a common mechanism for the initial thickening of young ice. It is distinct from ridging, which involves the formation of larger, more chaotic piles of ice.
