Wave breaking

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010136

The phenomenon where a wave's amplitude becomes too large for its shape to be stable, causing it to collapse and dissipate energy. This occurs when the wave crest's forward speed exceeds the wave's phase speed, leading to a turbulent cascade. In oceanography, wave breaking is a primary mechanism for air-sea gas exchange and energy transfer.
