Limiting wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006969
A surface gravity wave in water that has reached its maximum possible steepness before breaking. At this point, the crest of the wave becomes unstable, and the water particles at the crest move at the wave's phase speed. The ratio of wave height to wavelength for a limiting deep-water wave is approximately 1/7.
