Insulation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006574

The process or material that reduces the transfer of heat, electricity, or sound between objects or regions. In meteorology, atmospheric gases and clouds act as natural insulation, trapping outgoing longwave radiation and influencing the Earth's energy balance. Artificial insulation is used in instrument shelters to protect sensors from extreme temperatures and direct solar radiation.
