K index (space weather)

A quasi-logarithmic index that quantifies the maximum fluctuations of the horizontal components of the Earth's magnetic field during a three-hour interval. It measures geomagnetic activity, ranging from 0 (very quiet) to 9 (extremely disturbed). This index is used to characterize the severity of geomagnetic storms and substorms.
