K process
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006755
A rapid in-cloud process of a lightning flash in which a brief recoil streamer runs back along an already ionized channel, producing a short, small electric field change. K processes occur repeatedly between return strokes and after the last one, while the slower J process redistributes charge, and each K change lasts about a millisecond or less.
