J process
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006734
A method for calculating the rate of photolysis, or photodissociation, of a chemical species in the atmosphere. The calculation integrates the product of the species' absorption cross-section, its quantum yield for dissociation, and the actinic flux over the relevant range of solar wavelengths. The resulting photolysis rate coefficient, denoted by the letter J, is a first-order rate constant with units of inverse seconds (s⁻¹).
