Variometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009955
An instrument that measures the rate of change of a physical quantity, rather than its absolute value. In meteorology and geophysics, a magnetic variometer measures temporal variations in the Earth's magnetic field, which can be influenced by solar activity and space weather. These instruments are sensitive enough to detect small, rapid fluctuations that a standard compass or magnetometer would not register, providing data for geomagnetic storm forecasting.
