Magnetometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010596

An instrument designed to measure the strength and direction of a magnetic field. In atmospheric science, magnetometers are used to monitor the Earth's magnetic field and its interactions with the solar wind, which cause phenomena like geomagnetic storms and auroras. Ground-based and satellite-borne magnetometers provide continuous data on magnetic field variations, measured in units of nanoteslas (nT).
