Magnetic storm
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007087
A period of rapid and intense variation in the Earth's magnetic field, caused by the interaction of the magnetosphere with a shock wave and cloud of plasma from the sun. These events are triggered by solar phenomena like coronal mass ejections or solar flares that send a surge of solar wind toward Earth. The strength of a magnetic storm is measured by the Disturbed Storm Time (Dst) index, with values below -50 nanoteslas indicating a storm.
