Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009956
Annual layers of sediment deposited in lakes, particularly those fed by glacial meltwater. Each varve typically consists of a light-colored, coarser layer deposited in summer and a darker, finer layer deposited in winter. These distinct layers provide a chronological record of past environmental conditions, including climate variability and glacial activity.
