Proxy climate record
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008188
A natural archive of past climate conditions, derived from physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of environmental materials. These records provide indirect evidence of climate variables such as temperature, precipitation, or atmospheric composition before instrumental measurements were available. Examples include tree rings, ice cores, sediment layers, and coral growth bands, each offering insights into different timescales and aspects of Earth's climate history.
