Paleoclimate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007783
The climate of a past geological age, reconstructed from proxy data sources. Scientists study paleoclimates to understand Earth's climate system over long timescales, before the existence of instrumental records. Evidence is gathered from natural archives such as ice cores, tree rings, sediment layers, corals, and fossilized pollen, which preserve information about past temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric composition.
