Varied flow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010833
A type of open-channel flow in which the depth and velocity of the water change along the length of the channel. This condition occurs in natural rivers and streams where channel geometry, slope, or friction are not constant, or where flow rates are changing due to factors like tributary inflows or recent rainfall. Varied flow is classified as either gradually varied, with slow changes over a long distance, or rapidly varied, with abrupt changes like a hydraulic jump.
