Variational objective analysis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009954
A sophisticated data assimilation technique used in numerical weather prediction to combine observational data with a background forecast in a statistically optimal way. It minimizes a cost function that represents the difference between the analysis and both the observations and the background field. This method produces a spatially consistent and dynamically balanced initial state for weather models.
