Data assimilation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004860

A mathematical technique used to combine observational data with numerical model forecasts to produce an optimal estimate of the current state of the atmosphere or ocean. This process aims to reduce uncertainties in initial conditions for numerical weather prediction models, leading to more accurate forecasts. Common methods include optimal interpolation, Kalman filters, and variational methods.
