Optimum interpolation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007721

A statistical data assimilation technique used to estimate the value of a meteorological variable at unobserved locations by combining observations with a background field. It minimizes the mean square error of the analysis by weighting observations according to their accuracy and spatial correlation. This method is a precursor to more advanced techniques like the Kalman filter.
