Tangent linear approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009495

A mathematical technique used to linearize a non-linear model around a specific state, allowing for the study of small perturbations. It involves computing the Jacobian matrix of the model's equations at the current state. This method is applied in atmospheric science for sensitivity analysis and data assimilation, particularly in variational data assimilation schemes.
