Adjoint equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003305

A mathematical equation derived from a forward model, used to propagate information backward in time or space. It quantifies the sensitivity of a specific output (a cost function) to variations in the model's initial conditions or parameters. In meteorology, these equations are central to variational data assimilation schemes.
