Adjoint model

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003306

A computational model that represents the adjoint of a forward numerical model, such as a weather prediction model. It calculates the sensitivity of a chosen scalar quantity, like a forecast error, to perturbations in the model's input variables at an earlier time. This model is constructed by transposing and linearizing the original forward model equations.
