Nudging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007632

A data assimilation technique used in numerical weather prediction where model variables are continuously adjusted towards observations over a period of time. This method applies a relaxation term to the model equations, gradually pulling the model state closer to the observed state without forcing an exact match. The strength of the nudging term is often weighted by the quality and density of the available observations.
