Numerical dispersion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007633
An artificial spreading or distortion of waves or features in a numerical model, caused by the discretization of continuous equations into discrete grid points and time steps. This phenomenon arises when the phase speed of waves in the numerical scheme differs from the true physical phase speed, leading to errors in the propagation of information. Numerical dispersion is a common challenge in computational fluid dynamics and atmospheric modeling, requiring careful selection of numerical methods to minimize its impact.
