Meteotsunami

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010619

A tsunami-like wave generated by rapid changes in atmospheric pressure, often associated with fast-moving weather systems like squall lines or atmospheric gravity waves. These meteorological disturbances can create a pressure perturbation that propagates across a body of water, resonating with the water depth to amplify the wave. They are most common in enclosed or semi-enclosed basins, such as the Great Lakes or the Mediterranean Sea.
