The fundamental unit of length within the International System of Units (SI), forming the basis for measurements of distance, area, and volume. It is formally defined as the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second. In meteorology, it is used to specify visibility, cloud height, and the dimensions of weather systems.
