Pancake ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001980

  1. Circular pieces of sea ice, ranging from 30 centimeters to 3 meters in diameter, with raised rims formed by collisions between individual floes. This ice forms in agitated water, such as in areas of strong winds or waves, where slush and frazil ice accumulate and consolidate. It represents an early stage of sea ice formation.

  2. In hydrologic terms, circular flat pieces of ice with a raised rim; the shape and rim are due to repeated collisions
