Green rim

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006058

A phenomenon observed at sunset or sunrise where a fleeting green flash appears just above the upper limb of the sun. This optical effect is caused by the differential refraction of sunlight through the atmosphere, with green light being refracted more than red light. It requires a clear horizon and stable atmospheric conditions to be visible.
