Ramp structure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008389

The gently sloping boundary surface of a front, particularly a warm front, where warmer, less dense air ascends over a wedge of colder, denser air. This gradual upward slope forces broad-scale, slow ascent, leading to the formation of extensive stratiform clouds like cirrostratus, altostratus, and nimbostratus. The slope of this ramp is typically very shallow, with a vertical rise of about 1 kilometer for every 150 to 200 kilometers of horizontal distance.
