Rhumb-line course
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008570
A navigational path that follows a constant compass bearing, crossing all meridians of longitude at the same angle. While it is a straight line on a Mercator projection chart, it is a spiral on the Earth's surface that converges at the poles. A rhumb-line course is simpler to navigate than a great-circle route but is not the shortest distance between two points unless the course is due north, south, or along the equator.
