Grid navigation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010524
A navigational technique used primarily in polar regions for determining direction and position relative to a rectangular grid superimposed on a polar chart projection. On this grid, a constant direction, known as grid north, is established parallel to a chosen meridian, typically the prime meridian. This method overcomes the problem of rapid convergence of true meridians near the geographic poles, which makes navigation using true north impractical.
