Smudging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008965

A method of frost protection for crops that involves burning oil or other combustible materials to create smoke, which traps heat near the ground and prevents radiative cooling. The smoke acts as an artificial cloud cover, reducing heat loss from the surface during clear, calm nights. This technique is most effective for protecting orchards and vineyards from light to moderate frost.
