Smoothing
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008964
A statistical or numerical procedure applied to data to remove or reduce short-term fluctuations, noise, or small-scale features, revealing underlying trends or patterns. In meteorology, this is done by applying mathematical filters, such as a moving average, to gridded fields or time series. The degree of smoothing is controlled by the filter's characteristics, such as the size of the averaging window.
